Moving across the country with nothing more than what you can carry in your car, might just lead you to your future career. Well, that's at least what lead Jason to the multi-family rental industry! After graduating college, he packed up his car and headed west. With no place to stay once he got there!
In 1996, the Internet was merely in its infancy. Rental listing websites didn't exist and moving across the country often meant leaving home without firm housing arrangements in place before leaving. By today's standards, one would call that crazy!
While working for Shaw Cable in 1998, Jason co-founded the first rental listing website in Canada – www.myidealhome.com – with Richard Brown. He's the first to admit, "We didn't have a clue what we were doing, but we did have our ideas written down on Starbucks napkins!" There were no text books or business models to follow so they essentially pioneered many of the processes still in use today. 15 years later, My Ideal Home is still a thriving website with customers across North America.
Over the years, Jason gained extensive knowledge about how the rental industry in Canada worked. Landlords soon recognized him as a reputable authority on a number of topics including search engine optimization (SEO), Internet marketing and advertising, website development, branding strategies and online business development.
After returning home to Ontario, Jason would later partner with George Cottage who owned a small website called www.gscrentals.com. After a series of strategic moves and acquisitions, GSC Rentals was rebranded as www.gottarent.com. In just 18 months, he grew traffic to over 500,000 visitors a month from just 50,000 per month when he joined the company. By 2007, Gottarent.com was the leading rental website in Canada with the highest number of properties available online as well as the most traffic of any rental website. The partners would later make a successful exit when the company was acquired by Metroland Media Group Ltd (division of Torstar) in early 2009.
After a short stint as the Marketing Manager for Skyline Apartment REIT, Jason confirmed his passion was on the supplier side of the business, building technologies aimed at serving landlords. In 2010, he co-founded Landlord Web Solutions Inc. a boutique web design and data management firm that develops online solutions exclusively for the multi-family rental industry. He would also create the idea for and lead the development of Landlord WEBCON, Canada's premier Internet marketing conference that focuses on educating landlords and marketing personnel on the latest digital trends and technologies impacting the industry.
